Project Description
“To be an artist is to redefine, in some way, what work is.” Mako Fujimura speaks of this crucial process of re-making in his book Art and Faith. This project is about what that means for creating new work as I’m navigating my practice as a design professional while developing a commercial path for my art. Drawing portraits is my process for discovering a new definition for my work, and I wanted to start with people. My process included prayer for each evolution of 'creating new' which revealed areas for growth personally and artistically.
Project Process
In the beginning of 2021, I started reading Art and Faith by Mako Fujimura. The question that sparked me was, “What does creating new mean for me?” As I’m in the midst of experimenting ways in which I relate to my creative work professionally, personally, and with my family, I focused on the fruit of the Spirit. “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control” (Galatians 5:22). How might these portrait drawings behold the fruit of the Spirit? I thought about a new wineskin being created for each piece and the rendering process as a metaphor for filling with new wine.
Artist Bio
My name is Daehong Kim and I’m a visual artist. I work with digital and traditional mediums of graphite, oil pastels, and acrylic. My art is about enchanting moments people encounter with memories and spaces so that they are uplifted by imaginative possibilities. My current focus is creating portrait drawings available as commissions, originals, and prints. I reside in Lancaster, PA with my wife, son, and daughter.
